My view from the fireman’s seat on this blustery Maine evening, included this apparent Annulum Ignis, or, “ring of fire” lighting effect, caused by steam and smoke wafting across the beam of WW&F No. 9’s long-darkened headlight. As we prepared to head south, it faintly appeared and dissipated several times, before fully "igniting." Though I’ve taken pictures under similar conditions many times before, from a similar vantage point, this was the first time I’d ever witnessed this phenomenon. And given the occasion, it seemed almost divine. Perhaps it was Alice Ramsdell, or Harry Percival voicing their approval of a job well-done.
