Remarks & Notes

An eastbound freight holds the mainline at Skykomish while helpers attach to the rear for the climb up Stevens Pass and through the Cascade Tunnel. Even in the era of modern GEs, the current BNSF is limited by the grades and 8 mile tunnel separating Seattle from points east. Many unique operating procedures have been tried to keep traffic flowing on this northern transcon line.
