Remarks & Notes
After a Union Pacific track gang replaced the frog at West Mounds, Utah, on May 11, 2006, welders move in and use a thermite weld on the rail joints. A one-time-use form is attached to the rails surrounding the joint. Molten iron heated to an incredibly hot temperature in a reaction crucible located directly above is poured into the form, creating the weld.

Pictures of things often unseen in the world of railroading. Interesting equipment, operations, and people that help the railroad go around.
