Remarks & Notes
The last E-60 built with a steam generator (Class E60CP) hits the 3-track 4-lane grade crossing near Aberdeen's Amtrak station at 80 per, with a wave from the engineer. This locomotive was built in 1975 by GE (without the windshield screens) and was later rebuilt to Class E60MA (for Motor Alternator) and renumbered as the 601. Their original as-built weight of over 190 tons, plus their overall design being derived from an existing freight unit (the E60) all conspired against their intended operating speed of 120 mph, causing Amtrak to look elsewhere for a GG1 successor. One of their best attributes, in my opinion, was their melodious Nathan P01235 air horns, my all-time favorite Amtrak horn. No. 964/603 survives today at Strasburg.
