As the morning sun hits the big steel trestle at Covel, West Virginia, on October 18, 2003, an eastbound Norfolk Southern coal train thunders up the 2.07 percent grade to Clarks Gap. Two locomotives are on the front and two more are pushing on the rear. This would be the last train I would photograph on this part of the former Virginian Railway, which NS mothballed on October 1, 2015.
