Remarks & Notes
The Orange Blossom Special (Conrail symbol OBSS/OBSN) provided an opportunity for Yankee railfans to photograph locomotives from the capitol of the confederacy leading trains north of the Mason-Dixon line. These trains ran from Kearney, New Jersey to Tampa, Florida, using Conrail’s West Trenton line to Philadelphia, CSX’s ex-B&O lines to Washington/Alexandria, the RF&P to Richmond, and the CSX to Tampa. Because of Automatic Train Control requirements on the RF&P, that road’s power almost always lead between Richmond and Kearney. Here the OBSS enters electrified territory at West Trenton, NJ. Note that the second and third units share the same number (CSX 6643 and SBD 6643). This must have created some confusion at the CSX motive power desk. From the information that I can find, the SBD unit would eventually be numbered CSX 6389.
