Remarks & Notes
Norfolk Southern train M1R soars high above the town of Nicholson, Pennsylvania, as it crosses the 100-year old Tunkhannock Viaduct. On the second day of NS operations along the former Canadian Pacific D&H south lines, M1R was the first run of a new freight partnership between PanAm Railways' yard in East Deerfield, MA, and NS's Enola Yard near Harrisburg, PA. Named for the creek that flows underneath, the viaduct is commonly referred to as the Nicholson Bridge. It stretches 2,375 feet across the valley and is 240 feet at its highest point. While only the ten 180-foot arches can be seen, there are a total of twelve arches, with one at each end buried under the land fill. Construction began on the bridge in May 1912 by the Lackawanna Railroad as part of their 39.6- mile Clarks Summit-Hallstead Cutoff project. The entire project, including the bridge, was completed in only three years. It was officially dedicated and opened for service on November 6, 1915, and was at the time the largest concrete structure in the world. Photo by Kevin Burkholder. Landscape photography is difficult due to the challenge of combining good light and good scenery. Good railroad photography enters another level of complexity since it requires the first two while there is a train in view.
