Remarks & Notes
The one place on the Santa Fe in 1965, where one could be sure of finding an Alco PA or two is Santa Fe’s Argentine engine terminal in Kansas City, Kansas. On October 16, the 77, formerly 61B, passes through the service rack between runs, likely on Trains 7 and 8, the Fast Mail Express, or 3 and 4, the San Francisco Chief. Some worker with a spray gun and a too-quick hand has applied a little silver touch-up to the front buffer. Santa Fe was the first customer for Alco’s handsome PAs, acquiring an A-B-A set in 1946, and then going on to buy 28 A-units and 16 B-units. And it will be one the last roads to operate them in regular service.
