Remarks & Notes
Big GEs and EMDs battle the fierce grade of Ash Hill's eastern slope. The top of Ash Hill, which is where today's station sign of the same name is located, was originally called "Squaw Summit." Logic seems to dictate that the hill is what the train climbs, and the summit is where they crest the hill. Thus, "Squaw Summit" might be a more appropriate station name. Moreover, the eastern slope of this hill constitutes a relatively long, slogging battle with gravity. In the mid-1920s, Santa Fe radically changed the alignment on the eastern slope to make it less formidable.
