I found it amazing how fast a paint shop worker (carman by trade) could “stripe” a locomotive in the paint shop at Union Pacific’s Downing B. Jenks Shop in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Here, one the the men adds the red Scotchlite stripe to the rear of UP ES44AC No. 5401 on May 18, 2015. After a locomotive is masked, primed, and painted Armour yellow, all lettering and striping is applied. A protective film underneath is peeled away to reveal the adhesive, and is carefully positioned in place. Another protective film on the top surface is kept in place. After lettering a locomotive, the yellow is now masked, with many of the masking lines using the still-protected Scotchlite striping. After application of Harbor Mist gray, all masking, including the film over the Scotchlite stripes, can be removed.
