Minutes out of Denver Union Station, Burlington 9988A sweeps past the 38th Street yard office with Number 10, the Denver Zephyr. It’s mid-January, 1965, and though the sun has barely set behind the Rockies, the temperature is in the 20s and falling. Passengers, some of whom have just come from he ski slopes, are settling into the warmth of coaches and sleepers, perhaps ordering an early drink. Sixteen hours and 1034 miles from now will find them at Chicago’s Union Station, just a few steps from the Loop, where a day of steady snow and temperature in the teens awaits them.
