Remarks & Notes
The motive power is pure Pennsylvania, but those are the Rockies not the Appalachians in the background, and we in Denver, watching CB&Q train 66 ease out of the 38th Street yard for Chicago. In 1967 units from both PRR and rival New York Central have become a frequent sight here, though usually mixed in with Burlington’s own diesels. Pure consists like this, led by a Pennsy GP35, are rare. Nevertheless, in the mid-1960s railroads are pooling motive power in order to avoid servicing bottlenecks in places like Chicago and North Platte. The Q has pool arrangements as well with Union Pacific, Rio Grande, and Erie-Lackawanna, with the result that, to railfans’ delight, anyone’s power can show up almost anywhere. The Pennsy and NYC pools will last only a few more months, until the two eastern roads merge in 1968.
