While BNSF’s Butte to Garrison train rolls by in the background, Port of Montana No. 3641 switches the yard at Silver Bow, Montana, on September 25, 2006. Yes, there really is a port in Montana! The Port of Montana is strategically located at the only place in Montana that is served by two Class I Railroads and two major interstates, is located 7 miles west of Butte, and as they like to claim on their website, it’s “Where the rail meets the road.” They have there own locomotive too; a bright green GP38AC, that can trace its ancestry back to Union Pacific No. 1999, and before that, M-K-T No. 343. The EMD came to Katy as an ICG locomotive, built as Illinois Central No. 9519 in 1970.
