On this day in 1893, at approximately 5:19 p.m., for the first time a load of iron ore mined from the Merritt’s Iron Mountain Mine along the Mesabi Iron Range arrived in Duluth with ten cars pulled by the locomotive of the Duluth, Missabe & Northern Railroad. Fast forward to today and the names have changed slightly but the same thing is still happening on Minnesota's Iron Range. DMIR 404 leads 144 cars of taconite pellets down the hill from U.S. Steel's Minntac plant for the CN docks at Two Harbors, MN.
