General Electric’s U28C was something of a disappointment to its builder – only 71 sold – but Burlington liked the model well enough to buy 16, more than any other railroad, and to hang onto them through the merger that created Burlington Northern. Here the 563, which will become BN 5651, is just over a year old as it brings the CD, the road’s principle Chicago-Denver freight, past Sand Creek on the morning of April 3, 1967. Denver cars will be quickly sorted out at 38th Street and the rest of the train will be transferred to Rio Grande’s North Yard for quick dispatch on to Salt Lake City and points west.
