Improvised helpers on the Hill... As a Southern Pacific eastbound was climbing the Tehachapis on January 20th, 1978, it stalled out at Bealville. So, a westbound descending the hill was stopped, and U33Cs 8654 and 8606 were cut off an transferred to SP 8771 East to help it to the summit at Tehachapi, California. The train made an awfully nice sound as it assaulted the grade with three U33Cs, an SD45T-2 and an SD45 - even with one of the GEs not working!
