Remarks & Notes
Skirting the Tygart River, a B&O coal train passes the famed Phillipi covered bridge. The pre-civil war structure is the longest covered bridge in West Virginia. As a "double-barrel" two-lane bridge it is the only covered bridge to be a part of the federal highway system, carrying U.S. Route 250. Although it escaped plots to burn it during the civil war, the bridge could not avoid a gasoline spill in 1989 that ignited and severely damaged it. The bridge was restored, and still stands today.
