Remarks & Notes
New Hill is a remote rural community located about 21 miles south of Raleigh, NC. and is just about center of an 8 mile section of straight track on the then Seaboard Coast Line's (now CSX's) "S" Line between Raleigh and Hamlet Yard. On each side of the main track were 141 carlength signaled sidings which earned their keep on a daily basis. Strings of 132 lb welded rail had been laid on either side of both pass tracks to be installed during the months ahead. My vantage point for this photo was from the front steps of the lead engine of SCL No. 188 which the dispatcher has headed into the southward siding for a meet with No. 115 which is in full stride on this tangent section of railroad. The locomotives are followed by approximately 20 open-top gondola loads of limestone which produced a gritty cloud of aggregate that seemed to rain down endlessly as the train passed. I quickly retreated inside the cab.
