Climax! With Engineer Earl Knoob at the throttle, the 55-ton Moore-Keppel Company Climax #3 hauls a 7-car mixed freight consist north along the Greenbrier River toward the little town of Durbin, WV.
Not often photographed in this location, the little 2-trucker is performing a photo run-by for photographers at the current end of usable track, near Milepost 90. Just about 200 yards behind (south of) this train is the first of several washouts that pretty much severed the rail link between Durbin and the old logging town of Cass back in the mid-1980s. With the recent take-over of operations at the Cass Scenic Railroad, the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad has announced plans to fully restore the line from Cass to Durbin over the next couple of years.
