The Monticello Railway Museum This is the logo of the Monticello Railway Museum featuring Southern 2-8-0 No. 401. The not-for-profit museum was founded in 1966 and was originally known as "SPUR" - the Society for the Perpetuation of Unretired Railfans. With no luck in its original aim at encouraging the CB&Q to continue its steam powered railfan excursions, the group instead decided to run their own equipment. They acquired a 1925 Alco 0-4-0T, the Western Indiana Aggregate Co. #1 and later, in 1970 changed their name to the Monticello & Sangamon Valley Railway Historical Society, Inc., and then shortened in 1982 to the present day Monticello Railway Museum. The logo gives a nod to the Museum's prized possession, Southern 2-8-0 #401 which arrived a year later in 1971. No. 401 operates on special weekends along with several other notable engines, including Wabash F7A #1189 and a Canadian National FPA4 #6789.
