Locomotives were stationed in Opelika, Alabama for decades, starting back in the days of Central of Georgia and Western Railway of Alabama. The practice continued through years of corporate changes as Central became Southern, then Norfolk Southern, and the Western went through Family Lines, Seaboard System, to finally get to CSX. If I recall correctly, NS and CSX stopped keeping locos in Opelika several years ago as they were unneeded thanks to factory closings, final abandonment of the NS Roanoke branch. and other operational changes. Back on a spring day 40 years ago, though, Southern offered the Saturday morning railfan three geeps and a caboose. Unseen, but just beyond the GP35 and caboose, there was also a West Point geep and caboose.
Photos taken in the Deep South--primarily Alabama and Georgia--from the 1970s to the early 2000s. Featured railroads include the ICG, the West Point Route, SCL, Southern, Frisco, and even KCS.
