To cut cost, L&N simplified their great gray and yellow scheme several times. The black outlining the yellow was eliminated, the 'pine tree' nose treatment was simplified, lettering was simplified. Finally - in a preview of the CSX stealth scheme - the diesels were painted solid gray except for numbers and lettering.
