New Meets Old on the Silver Star
Amtrak 631 leads the Silver Star south through North Elizabeth. The consist includes some of the newest and oldest equipment on Amtrak's roster. The lead unit was the first ACS-64 to leave the Siemens manufacturing facility in 2015. The last car on the train is Viewliner II Baggage Car 61029 which also entered service in 2015. Mid-train is Amtrak diner 8504, built as CB&Q 195 "Silver Restaurant" for service on the California Zephyr in 1948 and amazingly still operating in regular service in 2015. Heritage equipment such as this is scheduled for retirement once replacement Viewliner II cars arrive online. The baggage cars are the first of this series to enter revenue service. |
