Remarks & Notes
Rain is just starting to fall on June 22, 1965, as three units -- 15,000-hp -- roll Extra 79 West down Archer Hill toward a crew change in Cheyenne. The DD35’s represent one of those UP forays into high-speed high-horsepower railroading that began back in steam days with the Big Boy. In the early 1960s the road began shopping around for 5000-hp in one package, and EMD responded with the double-diesel DD35. The railroad bought 15 A’s and 27 B’s and SP acquired three of the B-units, but despite demonstrations on other roads, nobody else wanted them.
