Remarks & Notes
A short time after I took this shot the snow began to fall here on the desolate uplands of eastern Utah. The picture doesn’t convey the discomfort caused by the wind chill. In the background is the sole reason for the existence of this 35 mile long railroad; the 500 megawatt Bonanza Power Plant. The Deseret Power Ry. usually runs 2 round trips a day in daylight from the Deserado Mine in Colorado and often an additional train at night. The empty, morning train is seen here returning to the mine loadout at track speed of about 40mph. In July of 2011 the railroad began a program of repainting it’s entire fleet of 4 active E60 electrics which included the 4th name in it’s history; Deseret Power Ry. Previously it had been known as the Deseret Ry.
