NS local freight, p90, heads south through Norris, SC with a solid train of grain cars consisting of at least seventy cars. That ole SD40-2 is putting on quite a show as it struggles to pull the train. The sign to the right of the locomotive is a Southern Railway whistle board used to warn the engineers when to sound the horn for a crossing. The dash dash dot dash pattern on the sign represents the pattern in which the engineer sounds the horn. The dashes represent long horn sounds, while the dot represents a short horn sound. So the engineer will blow a long long short long pattern. This is the standard horn pattern in all of America.
