Seldom visited, seldom photographed, Rio Grande’s narrow gauge west of Chama had a distinctly southwestern flavor of mesas and buttes. Here, on October 25, 1963, five years before abandonment, K-36 487 has crossed the Navajo River and will soon take on water for the rest of its journey to Durango. The bridge dates to 1888, the engine to Baldwin, 1925. Both are preserved, the 487 by the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railway, the bridge and tank by the Jicarilla Apache Reservation on whose land they are located.
