Here we see a close up of a Shay engine’s unique gearing arrangement which made the engine the perfect vehicle for logging as it could handle heavy loads, sharp inclines and sharp curves by delivering more torque to each of the wheels. This engine, one of 2,770 Shay engines built, now resides in the Colorado Railroad Museum and kept in running condition.
