Prior to the formation of Conrail, the D&H motive power roster was almost entirely uniformly painted in the "lightning stripe" scheme. On April 1, 1976, that all changed. The D&H was granted trackage rights to Potomac Yard outside of Washington, DC, and to Oak Island yard in Newark, NJ. This route expansion necessitated an instant roster growth. Beside acquiring twenty new GP39-2's from EMD, the railroad also took title to the Reading's GP39-2's, and the LV's GP38-2's and C420s, and many of the legacy paint schemes lasted well into the Guilford era. Here a pair of ex-LV GP38-2's lead an ex-Reading GP39-2 and one of the purchased-new GP39-2's under the former CNJ truss bridge in Lehighton.
Crazy pool power consists, colorful gatherings of locomotives at a diesel service area, or a mixture of colorful locomotives in storage lines. A minimum of four different paint schemes required.
