Long Island Railroad 4-6-0 #39 This Pennsylvania Railroad G5s locomotive was one of 121 such locomotives built (7/1929) by the railroad’s Juniata Shops in Altoona for commuter operations. Of the 121, 31 were built specifically for the LIRR. Three survive today, including LIRR #35 in Oyster Bay, NY undergoing a slow restoration to operation, and PRR #5741 across the street at the RR Museum of PA.
The Railroad Museum of Long Island announced an agreement on March 15th, 2013 between themselves and the Strasburg Railroad to restore and operate ex-LIRR G5s Steam Locomotive Number 39. The terms of the contract provide for the Railroad Museum of Long Island to raise $900,000 and the Strasburg Rail Road will add $1,086,861.00 to the project and complete the restoration of 39 and then operate the locomotive on their property for a period of 48 years.
