The Silverton. The throaty bark of a D&RGW K-28 Locomotive echos off the nearby hills as she struggles up the 2.5% grade between Hermosa and Rockwood, CO with an early morning Silverton Train. An overnight dusting of snow decorates the landscape for this chilly, late winter scene, but by late February, the sun is starting to get strong in the Rockies. By noontime, a lot of this snow will be just a memory.
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are all that remains of the legendary Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge system. Here you'll find some of my favorites from these two beautiful railways.
