Winchester & Western leased this SD9 from the Black River & Western for approximately a year. The railroad was looking for larger power than its stable of GP9/10s, and this type seemed like a natural fit at the time. While the unit performed well and was liked by the crews, the purchase price was more than expected, and GP38-2s ultimately were added to the WW VA Division roster. A single SD9 was purchased by the WW, and operates on the NJ Division. The BDRV 9581 wound up on lease to Kinder Morgan in Newport News, VA and is still there as of early 2015.
