Remarks & Notes
A locomotive lash-up like this was quite rare to find on a through-freight this late in 1966 on the Seaboard Air Line Virginia Division. This September 1966 photo finds First 88, operating as Extra 1966 North led by freshly painted GP9 1966, followed by 4 GP7's, all in excellent paint condition. The heavy train is generating a cloud of blue smoke as the brake application brings it to a slow crawl to negotiate several tight curves and a 10 mph crossover. The extra is crossing the NS diamond at Raleigh Tower as it enters the downtown Raleigh area.

No matter what the paint or engine, there is something about a pair or group of identical engines that really makes a photo tick.
