Remarks & Notes
N&W 611's first public excursions took place on Labor Day weekend, 1992, consisting of three one-way trips. Saturday's trip was from Roanoke to Norfolk, with a Sunday return, followed by a Monday ferry move to Alexandria. While being turned in Norfolk, 611 suffered a minor mishap, a tender trick derailment, if I recall correctly. With 611 unavailable to make a return to Roanoke at a reasonable hour, N&W dispatched a trainload of very disappointed passengers out of Norfolk behind a pair of C30-7's. At some point, possibly Crewe, the C30-7's were replaced with an SD45/SD40 duo. Here, flares forward, the train passes the Craddock-Terry Lion Brand Shoes factory in Farmville. Today, this line is abandoned, and part of the High Bridge Trail State Park.
