Extraordinary circumstances have brought Rock Island 131 to Palmer Lake on June 27, 1965. A massive series of storms two weeks before swept away almost every railroad line into Denver. UP’s tracks east of town, Rock Island’s usual route to the Mile High City, are still out. And so Rock’s freights are following its own branch from Limon to Colorado Springs and turning north over the Joint Line, which has itself just been restored to service. Making the southbound return, the 131 is likely the first Alco FA – albeit EMD-repowered – to ever appear on these tracks.
