| Conrail train OIGC (Oak Island - Corning) parallels the Lehigh River as it travels westbound through the Lehigh Gap on former Lehigh and Susquehanna/Jersey Central rails. We are standing on the western approach to the onetime landmark Lehigh and New England bridge which spanned the river at this point. On the eastern approach to the right is the site of Gap Junction yard and the mainline to Pen Argyl and Maybrook. To the left is the LNE Palmerton branch, which provided a two mile long descent to an interchange with the Chestnut Ridge Railway. The switch for this branch was at a point where a simple derailment could quickly turn catastrophic, and a gauntlet switch with a gentle divergence was installed. This switch measured almost 200 feet from the switchpoints to the frog. Finally, out of site on the near riverbank was the Lehigh Valley Railroad mainline. All of this trackage has now been reduced to a single line seeing only a few trains in each direction daily.
