With the roar and the smoke-blast of a jet plane, Extra 25 West storms out of Cheyenne and heads for Sherman Hill. UP is already at work raising the 8500-hp units to 10,000 horses, making them the most powerful locomotives on anybody’s track, a record still unbroken. But turbine power comes at a price: Like sharks, the big engines have to keep moving to earn their keep. By 1970, the railroad will have given up on turbine power and turned to ever more powerful diesels to move its trains. The west end of Cheyenne will be a little quieter, though not as interesting
