Remarks & Notes
One of a handful of the original full-carbody Alco-GE turbines still on the roster in March, 1964, GTEL 58 waits at the east end of the Cheyenne yards to take an extra to North Platte. In its restless quest for ever-increasing head-end power, UP has married a GP9B to the 4,500-hp turbine, until it is swept from the roster later in the year. But the search for bigger engines, more power goes on. The 58’s trucks and bolsters will go under one of the new twin-engine 5000-hp U50s that GE is just starting to deliver.
