Remarks & Notes

Snowy McEwen Sunrise. A mountain snow flurry that drifted in from the nearby Elkhorns continues to lightly dust the McEwen Yard, as the sun rises amid breaking clouds to the east. This surreal scene greets the crews of two Sumpter Valley trains as they complete final servicing at the water tank and prepare to depart for destinations in the mountains to the west. Powering today's trains are Eccles Lumber Heisler #3, a wood-burning, 40-ton, 2-trucker, built in 1915, and Sumpter Valley Mikado #19, an oil-burning, 1920-vintage Alco. Both locomotives were built for this line, and roughly a century later, both are still polishing the same rails.
