Passing the local at Hawley Spur. A Sumpter Valley local mixed with Heisler #3 on the point, holds the Hawley Spur west of McEwen for the passage of a hot-shot freight making the run out to Prairie City.
The power on the freight is the handsome Mikado #19. The 19 is a 1920 Alco product, which served the Sumpter Valley until her retirement in 1940. She was then shipped off to the White Pass & Yukon and served as their #81 during the war years and beyond. She was repatriated to the reconstructed Sumpter Valley tourist line in 1977 and was restored to operation in 1996. Interestingly, this Mikado was built as a wood-burner and remained in that configuration during her working years at Sumpter Valley. Legacy photos of her depict large wood-racks on the tender, and a big "cabbage stack" spark arrestor. She was converted to burn oil on the WP&YR, and she remains an oil-burner today.
