Remarks & Notes
NKP 190, an ALCO PA-1 was built during March 1948 for the NYC&STL, better known as the Nickel Plate Road. Doyle McCormack's dad worked for this railroad, and this locomotive was the first diesel Doyle rode on. This particular engine was built for the Santa Fe in December 1948 as ATSF 62-L. On 4-5-67, the Santa Fe retired the unit and sold it to MK in Boise, ID. It went to the Delaware and Hudson on 8-11-75 as D&H 18. It was sold in 1978 to the NdeM, where it ran as DH-18 for a few years. The 18 was purchased by Mr. McCormack in 2000 and moved back to the United States for restoration in Oregon with sister unit D&H 16, which was ATSF 59-L. The 16 is now owned by the Museum of American Railroad in Frisco, TX, where the engine is presently located. They are planning on returning it to its as delivered Santa Fe appearance. Doyle and his team of volunteers have worked on this thing for the past 15 years getting to to this condition, and it actually made a cross country trip this past summer to Spencer, NC for the Streamliners at Spencer event. It is worth seeing in person.
