Amtrak's inaugural Knowledge Corridor train is seen at the Greenfield, Massachusetts station on Pan Am Southern's Conn River Line on Monday, December 22. Amtrak will shift the Vermonter to this route beginning Monday, December 29. Amtrak has not serviced this route since deteriorating track conditions in 1989 saw the Vermonter train shifted off the Boston & Maine to the Central Vermont Railway route via Palmer, Massachusetts.
The successor to the Montrealer, the Vermonter runs between St. Albans, Vt., and Washington, DC. Much of the northern part of the route runs along the Connecticut and White Rivers.
