The drastic increase in oil shipments by rail has brought a related increase of colourful lashups to the CN mainline east of Toronto. Prior to this, the odds of catching anything more exotic to the area that BC Rail or Illinois Central power was practically nil. Witness CN's daily Montreal to Chicago intermodal train 149 rounding the sweeping curve through Whitby, Ontario, behind CN 8881, BCOL 4605, and a brand new BNSF 8289. Though not a crude train, the BNSF power undoubtedly came east on one and is now headed back west on what was likely the next available westbound. Typically the crude trains have three units eastbound and one or two westboud, depending on how much fill they tack onto the headend. 1414hrs.
