Remarks & Notes
Known as “Rocky” by the Great Northern, this trademark mountain goat perched atop a rock would become the official trademark for that railroad in 1936. For much of its life Rocky would be encircled by the words “Great Northern Railway” on cars painted in bright colors, such as Glacier Green seen here. This version of Rocky as well as the Glacier Green paint scheme would last until 1967 when the GN decided to go with a more modern logo of just Rocky still standing atop of rock enclosed in a circle without any verbiage. That year also brought about the Big Sky Blue paint scheme which would ultimately be the railroad’s last due to the upcoming BN merger in 1970.
