UP E9 No. 960 and E8 No. 928 face off in the late evening hours of June 22, 1978. No. 960 will be part of a quartet of E9s the next day pulling the Hinkle Special train out of Portland to celebrate the grand opening of the then new Hinkle hump yard. UP invested heavily in improving the yard. Unfortunately, it attracted freight traffic that used to move directly to North Platte, and carload service to the CNW connection at Fremont, NE from the Pacific Northwest often took 1-4 days longer than previously. The 928 would head to Seattle for Family Days service.
A continuously growing album of photos that IMHO reveal the awesome and seldom-seen beauty of the railroad world from the dimming of day to dawn's early light! From dusk to dawn, trains roll on! (I'm still finding gems of sunset-to-sunrise surprises!)
