Quittin' Time. Pacific Railroad Preservation Association Engineer Jim Abney (left) debriefs the evening's activities with Fireman Jeff Honeyman (right) upon completion of a Lerro Productions Charter with the SP&S 700 at the Oregon Rail Heritage Center in Portland, Oregon. For these two gentlemen, running the 700 in the yard had to be a bit like Helio Castroneves bringing his Indy Car to the drags. The high-stepping 700, with her 77" drivers was built for sustained high speeds on wide open track. The short sprints that she made for Pete Lerro and his gang were more like the thousand-foot dashes that the Top Fuel Cars run. With nearly 70,000 lbs of tractive effort, the big Baldwin made short work of briskly accelerating three heavyweight coaches from a standing start to a speed that still remains classified in just a few seconds.
