The Chillicothe area is rich in B&O and C&O history. The B&O had two bridges over the Scioto River within a quarter of a mile of one another. After the remainder of the B&O's "Ohio Division" was sold at Hamden and the west bridge was demolished, this very steep connector had to be installed from the C&O's "Northern" to the B&O's former "Ohio Division." This was done so that they could use the remaining bridge. In this picture, the Chillicothe local traverses the grade. The bridge over the former B&O can be seen to the right on the "Northern." The track lowers to the B&O in roughly one quarter mile to match the B&O's level.
