Remarks & Notes
A pair of Terminal Railroad Association of Saint Louis GP38-3 diesels sit in the railroad's Madison Yard for a crew change. GP38-3 locomotives are EMD GP38s and GP40s rebuilt by MPI, which included a fully reconditioned cab, 3600-gallon fuel tank, D78 traction motors, AR10 traction alternators, a Woodward CLC control system and extended-range dynamic braking. The original 3000 hp turbocharged engine was replaced by 2000 hp Roots-blown EMD 645 engine. This engine took a circuitous route to the TRRA - built as Penn Central GP40 3164, it became Conrail 3164 in 1976 with that merger. CR sold it to the Denver & Rio Grande Western, where it originally kept the number 3164 before D&RGW repainted and renumbered it to 3150. It was later sold to Helm Leasing, becoming HLCX 3878 before being sold, once again, to a new owner - the Kansas City Southern (as their 3878). And then to owner number five - the TRRA. Photographed on railroad property with permission and full PPE.
