A ghost of railroading's past can be seen over CSXT's A&WP/WofA Subdivision 40 miles south of Atlanta in Newnan, Ga. One of five coal towers still standing in the state of Georgia, it is one of two which stand over a mainline track. Only ten miles from this location along the old Central of Georgia heading east, another of the five coaling towers can be seen in Raymond, Georgia. Throughout the southeast, the vast majority of steam era structures worn torn down rather quickly after the transition to diesels.
Two minutes after midnight on October 12,2014, northbound CSX manifest Q581 breaks the silence as it appears under the tower and crosses over Norfolk Southern's former Central of Georgia mainline that once carried trains from Chattanooga, Tn. to Macon, Ga. via Rome and Griffin. A pair of GE AC6000s (CSX designation CW60AC) provides power for this Nashville, Chattanooga to Atlanta reroute which has ran via Birmingham and LaGrange.
