| It's always busy when the largest taconite mine in the U.S. is running at capacity. At this facility, iron-bearing rock called taconite is mined and processed into iron ore pellets. Annual production capability at Minntac is approximately 16 million net tons of pellets. And to keep everything running, Minntac relies on CN to haul raw materials in (one of which is a limestone train on the left) and too haul out finished product ( on the right is IC 6264 leading a U-790 destined for unloading at Two Harbors, MN) which is brought by ship to one of U.S. Steel's own steel making facilities where these pellets will be converted to liquid iron in one of the company’s blast furnaces.
